July Sightings Summary

31 July 2009

The month began with settled weather and a good variety of sightings. The common terns nesting on Glas Eilean and Fraoch had hatched chicks and these were beginning to move around from their nest site. Later in the month a day of high winds gave the great black backed gulls the opportunity to feast upon the chicks. With only 7 or 8 hatched on Glas Eilean it didn’t take long for them to be eaten.

Herring Gull chicks became more visible and we witnessed quite a few incidents of cannibalism amongst them.

Porpoises were seen frequently, although their numbers are rapidly declining, we had several good close sightings of mother and calves. We estimate four porpoise born in Gairloch this year.

Minke Whale sightings were average based on previous years. Most sightings were recorded just off Longa Island and the mouth of Loch Gairloch.

A pod of approximately 15 Bottlenose Dolphins visited Loch Gairloch with at least one calf in the pod. They were seen in Strath Bay, showing off their acrobatic ability to delighted onlookers before making their way out of the loch towards Sands Campsite. Photo identification shots showed these to be part of the same pod recorded in Loch Gairloch in May this year.
